Season 2 Beta Update

Greetings Commanders!

Thanks for playing the beta and all your feedback around it, we have been reading everything and working to address some of your concerns before release.

The biggest concerns we have seen so far revolve around Battle Feel (speed of the battle and interactivity), Combat Orders, and Soldier Balance.

 

Battle Feel

We think that ability casting and movement are systems that can be enjoyable, but did not shine for two reasons in the first beta release for two main reasons:

  • The battle is too fast and hectic to react to anything.
  • It is usually best to use every ability instantly, which is not very strategic and makes playing on “Auto” often as good (if not better) than playing manually.

This meant that the new actions were not being used AND we removed the old player action (combat orders), resulting in LESS interaction and strategy than before (the opposite of what we wanted)!!! To address this we have made two SIGNIFICANT changes:

 

 

*NEW* Ability Authorization System

 

  • Players will now start with one Ability Authorization Point (AAP) and generate more over time, up to a maximum of 3.
  • Using a soldier’s ability costs one AAP (abilities cannot be used without AAP).
  • Some soldier abilities or squad perks may grant AAP.
  • AI and “Auto” will spend AAP when it is available, always using the first soldier ability that became available. (Often a very suboptimal choice)

 

 

Battle balance

 

  • Significantly increased soldier HP
  • +50% Ability cooldown time
  • Soldiers now start with 30% Ability Charge
  • Many soldier abilities and ability cooldowns have been changed to work with these changes.

The purpose of these changes is to slow down the battle and make it more readable, while also increasing the impact of using abilities strategically. The best way to learn about how these changes impact the game is to actually play, so jump into the arena and let us know what you think!

 

Combat Orders

We have understood your frustration at the removal of CO’s, and are in the process of bringing them back (assuming the community still believes this would be a positive addition). This would include a small redesign and simplification to work with the new gameplay and to account for the extra actions the player has to make.

 

Soldier Balance

Soldier balance (especially legendaries) is not something that is intended to dramatically change with S2, but it is inevitable with new gameplay that soldiers work differently. We had not rebalanced every soldier for the beta, but this is in progress and today’s update will include MANY soldier changes. We expect to continue delivering fast soldier balance changes after the release in reaction to any problematic soldiers! Please continue giving feedback on balance in the “S2-soldiers-balance” channel.
